What began as a dream vacation in Kenya has ended in heartbreak and mystery after a 36-year-old Dutch citizen of Bangladeshi origin who had been missing for nearly three weeks was found dead in Mombasa.
Sheikh Mahfuzur Rahman Emon, described by family members as a passionate traveler who loved exploring new countries and cultures, had travelled to Kenya on April 11, 2026 for a holiday. According to relatives, he was excited about the trip and had previously visited Kenya twice before. This was reportedly his third visit to the country.
Family members say the last communication with him happened on April 24 before he suddenly disappeared without a trace. Days earlier, Emon had posted on Facebook that he was travelling to Mombasa using the Madaraka Express train, a journey that would later become the last publicly known update about his whereabouts.

After repeated attempts to reach him failed, panic quickly spread within the family. Relatives in Bangladesh launched online appeals desperately seeking information about him while also contacting the Bangladesh and Netherlands diplomatic missions in Kenya for assistance.
For nearly 20 days, the family lived in uncertainty, hoping he would eventually contact them alive.
Instead, they would later receive devastating news that his body had been found and identified at Coast General Hospital in Mombasa.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but relatives strongly suspect foul play. Family members say Emon was known to carry cash and loved wearing gold chains and jewelry during his travels, factors they now fear may have exposed him to criminals.
The family is also questioning whether individuals he interacted with during his stay in Kenya may know more about his final moments. Investigators are now expected to retrace his movements in Mombasa and establish where he stayed, who he met, and what exactly happened between the time he vanished and the discovery of his body.
The tragic case has shocked both the Bangladeshi community and Kenyans online, with many expressing concern over the safety of foreign tourists travelling alone in the country. Mombasa remains one of Kenya’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors from around the world because of its beaches, culture and nightlife.
Friends describe Emon as cheerful, adventurous and deeply passionate about travel. Images shared online during the search effort showed him smiling and enjoying life, making the news of his death even more painful for those who knew him.
At the moment, authorities have not publicly revealed the exact cause of death as investigations continue. Detectives are expected to examine whether robbery or other criminal activity may have been involved.
Back home, his family is now left mourning a son and brother whose trip abroad ended in tragedy far away from home.
What was meant to be another exciting African adventure has now become a painful international mystery leaving behind grief, unanswered questions and growing calls for justice over the death of a tourist who arrived in Kenya alive and hopeful but never made it back home.
