Kenya’s university gaming scene is about to experience one of its biggest esports moments yet after PUBG MOBILE and Infinix officially launched a nationwide university gaming tournament targeting student gamers across the country.

The competition, dubbed the PUBG MOBILE Varsity Showdown (PMVS), will bring together campus gamers from different universities to compete for cash prizes, smartphones and national recognition in what organizers describe as a major push to grow Kenya’s esports ecosystem.

The tournament was officially announced in Nairobi and will run from mid-May to late June 2026, featuring several stages of online competition before culminating in an offline grand finale expected to attract top gaming talent from Kenyan campuses.

Participants will compete for a USD 1,000 prize pool together with 10 newly launched Infinix GT 30 Pro gaming smartphones.

According to organizers, the event is more than just a gaming competition. It is also part of a broader effort to position Kenya as a serious esports destination while creating opportunities for young digital creators and competitive gamers.

Infinix, which is powering the tournament, says the competition will also introduce gamers to the new Infinix GT 30 Pro smartphone built specifically for high-performance gaming, smooth graphics, faster response and enhanced cooling capabilities during intense mobile gameplay.

The tournament structure will feature online qualifiers, quarterfinals, semifinals and an offline grand finale, with each participating squad consisting of four players and one substitute.

Organizers say official PUBG MOBILE tournament rules and scoring systems will be used throughout the competition to ensure fairness and professional esports standards.

Beyond gameplay, the campaign will also feature campus ambassador programs, gaming creator campaigns, online mini tournaments and social media engagement activities aimed at building stronger gaming communities among Kenyan youth.

The launch comes at a time when esports and mobile gaming continue growing rapidly across Africa, with universities increasingly becoming hotspots for competitive gaming culture, streaming and digital content creation.

PUBG MOBILE says it remains committed to growing African gaming communities through localized content, creator support programs and cultural integration within the game itself.

The company has also announced plans to include more African music, creators, voice packs and local cultural elements in future updates as part of efforts to make the game more relatable for African players.

Meanwhile, Infinix continues expanding its footprint within Africa’s youth market by focusing heavily on gaming-focused smartphones and smart technology devices.

University students interested in participating in the PUBG MOBILE Varsity Showdown have now been urged to form squads and officially register online before the qualifiers begin.
