Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested two suspects and recovered a Phantom pistol following a targeted operation along the busy Kisumu–Busia Highway.
The suspects, identified as Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor, were intercepted while travelling in a black Toyota Prado, registration number KCB 411A, after detectives acted on intelligence reports.
According to investigators, the operation involved a strategic ambush along the highway, a key route linking Kisumu to the Busia border. Officers monitored the suspects before moving in to stop the vehicle, bringing the operation to a swift end.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a Phantom pistol, a weapon often associated with criminal activity, along with a machete concealed in a black sheath and three mobile phones. Detectives believe the items could be linked to planned or ongoing criminal operations, although investigations are still ongoing to establish their intended use.
The two suspects were immediately taken into custody and transported to Maseno Police Station, where they are being processed ahead of their court appearance. The vehicle and all recovered items have been seized and are being held as exhibits.
Authorities say the arrests mark a significant step in ongoing efforts to curb crime along major transport corridors, which have in recent months been flagged as hotspots for criminal activity.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has indicated that further investigations are underway, including forensic analysis of the recovered items and digital examination of the seized mobile phones, as officers work to determine whether the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network.
