A 52-year-old man is under police guard in hospital after a road crash in Migori led to the discovery of a large consignment of suspected cannabis worth more than Sh34 million.

Samson Ayiera Chacha was driving a trailer, registration number KBS 548H, on April 24, 2026 when he lost control and veered into River Kuja. The vehicle plunged into the water, leaving the driver with serious injuries. He was rescued by members of the public and rushed to Migori County Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Officers from the National Police Service secured the scene and later mounted a recovery operation to retrieve the submerged trailer. The vehicle was towed to Kamagambo Police Station, where a search revealed a large quantity of bhang concealed inside.

Anti-narcotics officers from Isebania were called in to take over the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the trailer was transporting approximately 1,137.8 kilogrammes of cannabis, with an estimated street value of Sh34.1 million.

Police say the suspect remains under watch at the hospital and will be arraigned in court once he is discharged. Investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the consignment and its intended destination.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking networks operating within the region, warning that those involved will face the full force of the law.
