A suspect has been detained in Nairobi as investigators intensify a probe into a viral video alleged to contain hate speech and ethnic incitement.
Bare Sahara Ahmed was presented before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Kahawa Law Courts, where the Directorate of Criminal Investigations secured a 10-day custodial order to allow time for ongoing investigations.
The court directed that the suspect be held at Kilimani Police Station as detectives carry out further inquiries. It also authorised forensic analysis of digital evidence linked to the case, including call data records and financial transactions, which investigators say could be critical in establishing the full scope of the alleged offence.
Authorities indicated that the case revolves around a widely circulated video that has drawn public attention, with concerns raised about its potential to incite division along ethnic lines. The investigation is expected to focus on the origin of the content, how it was distributed, and whether it violated laws governing hate speech and national cohesion.
The move by investigators signals a firm stance by authorities in addressing online content that could undermine peaceful coexistence. Officials say such cases are being treated with urgency, given the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public discourse.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has urged members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility when sharing or creating content online, warning that communication that promotes hatred or division could attract legal consequences.
The case is ongoing, with further court proceedings expected once investigations are complete.
