A task force formed to study deathrow convicts has filed a report and proposal on how the 4,819 convicts held across the country would be re-sentenced.
Those in mandatory death sentence are in 38 prisons across the country.
It’s interesting that from the data collected, Luhya men form a majority of those in jail for murder charges at 38% and are followed by Luo men. Kikuyu and Kisii men tie at third place as death row convicts.
On the other hand for women, the data shows Kamba lead at 45% and are closely followed by Kikuyu women, then Luhya and Meru women follow in third and fourth
The report shows that 27% of the men hail from Nyanza but shows that there were no women from the region as per the samples given. At least 9% of the men are from Eastern region. However, only 2% of the men and 15% of the women on death row hail from Central.
From Coast we have 7% of the men and 5% of women and none of the offenders are from Nairobi. From Rift Valley, 18% of those incarcerated for murder are men while 10% are women.
